First Circuit Statistics


The First Judicial Circuit is comprised of fourteen counties in southeast South Dakota including:  Aurora, Bon Homme, Brule, Buffalo, Charles Mix, Clay, Davison, Douglas, Hanson, Hutchinson, McCook, Turner, Union and Yankton.The first Circuit had a population of 122,787 in 2006 and covers an area of 8,432 Square miles.

During Fiscal Year 2008 (July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008), the First Circuit processed…, 2008), the First Circuit processed…

·     Criminal files:  811 felonies, 2,984 Class One Misdemeanors, and another 20,930 Class Two Misdemeanors and Petty Offenses.

·        Domestic Relations and Protection Order filings:  1,555

·        Civil and Probate filings:  3,402

·        Juvenile matters:  1,158 cases

·        Small Claims actions:  4,510

·        Miscellaneous filings: 1,310

·        Criminal, Civil and Money Judgment record searches: 15,232

·        Child support receipts:  1,005 (those receipts not processed through
  Child Support Enforcement)

Other statistics in FY2008 include:

·        Collected nearly $6 million in fines, fees, deposits and other costs.

·        Disbursed nearly $6 million to the State, counties, victims and other recipients

·        Held 26 jury trials

·        Maintain 70.4 full-time equivalent (FTE) positions including judges, court administration staff, clerk of courts staff, bailiffs, court services (probation) staff,  and  law clerks.
